The Green Beneath: Opportunities in Aquaculture

Belize

Belize’s marine ecosystem including fisheries and reefs are threatened by climate change, unsustainable coastal development and overfishing. Declining fish populations and loss of habitat have affected the livelihoods of thousands of fishers that depend on these sources.

With the support of TNC, Belizeans have found an alternative that not only provides supplementary income, but also provides habitat for ecologically and commercially important species such as Spiny lobster, Snappers and Parrotfish. Our research suggests a myriad of positive social, economic and ecological impacts as a result of sustainable seaweed farming. TNC have partnered with fishing communities, providing training in the best management practices for a sustainable seaweed mariculture industry which benefits the environment while creating a reliable food source and employment for coastal communities.
